Liskeard Leisure Centre is making waves not just in its pool, but in sustainability. Thanks to a cutting-edge solar installation, the facility is now generating clean energy on-site and reducing its electricity bills in the process. Operating under the Better Brand, GLL is a not-for-profit social enterprise managing Liskeard Leisure Centre on behalf of Cornwall Council.

Why This Project Matters

Leisure centres are some of the most energy-hungry buildings in the public sector and as energy prices climb and local authority funding continues to shrink year on year, many public swimming pools across the UK face an uncertain future. To address these growing challenges, solar power is proving to be a clean, cost-effective way to keep vital community facilities running sustainably.

At Liskeard Leisure Centre, SunGift Solar designed and installed a tailored solution with the installation of a 156kWp solar PV system paired with a 128kWh Sigen battery. This state-of-the-art setup is transforming how the centre generates, stores, and uses its energy reducing reliance on the grid while cutting operational costs.

“We’re very pleased with the work that’s been done and it’s already making a difference. Sustainability is key to running the centre as cost effectively and efficiently as possible and we’re grateful to Sport England for the funding they provided. We wanted to keep the centre operational whilst installation was underway and SunGift Solar enabled us to do that, whilst also meeting our deadlines.” Brett Price, General Manager of Liskeard Leisure Centre

SunGift has worked with dozens of public sector organisations across the UK, tailoring bespoke solar systems to schools, hospitals, government buildings and now multiple GLL-operated leisure centres including Liskeard and Helston.

“SunGift are delighted to have installed solar panels and batteries at Liskeard Leisure Centre helping the Centre save money on their electricity bills and reduce their carbon emissions. We delivered the project on time and on budget despite a tight external deadline and while allowing the Centre to remain fully operational.” Gareth Walton, Commercial Sales

A Smart Investment in Sustainability for the Public Sector

Across the UK, the public sector is increasingly embracing solar power as a practical way to cut carbon emissions and reduce long-term energy costs. From schools and hospitals to council buildings and leisure centres, solar is becoming a central part of sustainability strategies.

At SunGift Solar, we’ve been supporting public sector organisations since 2005, delivering tailored, hassle-free solar PV systems designed around each site’s specific energy needs and budget. Our approach is collaborative and focused on long-term performance, which is why many of our clients come back to us for additional projects.

One such client is Greenwich Leisure Limited (GLL), the not-for-profit operator behind Liskeard Leisure Centre. We’ve now completed two installations for GLL, including a previous solar project at Helston Leisure Centre each one helping to ease the pressure of rising energy bills while supporting environmental targets.

With energy-intensive facilities like leisure centres under increasing financial strain, solar PV is proving to be a cost-effective and sustainable solution that helps safeguard these vital community services for the future.
