Elon Musk, co-founder of Tesla, nailed his colours to the mast recently by saying he would solve South Australia’s grid issues in 100 days, by providing at least 100 megawatts of battery storage. If not, he says he’ll provide the system for free.

South Australia’s been having problems keeping the air conditioning on. Heatwaves in the region have led to blackouts by causing spikes in energy demand, and the grid is struggling to keep up.

The idea is that the batteries will fill up with power in the day, when there is spare energy available, then kick in to provide power when everyone goes home and switches their air conditioning on.

Elon Musk has promised he can deliver the battery system within 100 days of the contract being signed. Watch this space!
